We continued south and headed towards the Harz mountains, a tiny bit of
Switzerland amongst the flat plains of the north. First stop was
Wolfenbüttel, another on the ye-olde-village tour. I really enjoyed this one.
The architecture was similar to Celle, street after street of half-timbered
houses, but the character was much more inviting. Lots of people going about
their daily chores, shopkeepers hawking their fresh food, everybody smiling
and seeming happy to be here.
Once again we spent a while just wandering the streets then picked up a few
vital supplies before heading back to the van. We had lunch where we'd parked
then headed up into the mountains.

We soon came to the town of Goslar, made rich by its silver mines and also
home to a feast of medieval architecture. It had a wonderful market square
and a number of other attractive buildings but didn't have the same feel as
the last two towns. Too many ordinary buildings amongst the extraordinary.
Still worth the visit but a little overshadowed.
The day was late so we started to look for a camp-spot. As we began to climb
into the mountains we found a nice little spot to stop. Quiet and flat and
surrounded by trees.
