Esbjerg - Kruså, Denmark
Tuesday 21st September 1999 |
We awoke this morning to the sound of rain on the roof of the van. Excuse enough for a lie in. We eventually arose and had breakfast then turned our thoughts to the day ahead. Something slow we decided. We headed down the road to the town of Tønder and picked up a few items for lunch before moving on to the nearby village of Møgeltønder. It's virtually just one street, the cobblestoned Slotsgade running from a delightful 12th century church at one end to the private castle of Prince Joachim at the other, lined with thatched-roof houses along the way. After a stroll up and down the street we had some lunch in the car-park overlooking the Prince's palace. It was such a pleasant spot we decided to stay for while longer, Anita having a sleep whilst I started the research on Germany. By late afternoon we decided to move on. I had a stroll around the nearby park whilst Anita caught a few more winks then we headed east towards the German town of Flensburg, just across the border. As we neared the crossing point we thought we'd spend one more night in Denmark, the roads on this side looked more promising for a nice place to stop. We passed the turn-off for the border and kept heading east, along small roads, soon coming to a picnic spot a couple of hundred metres off the road and set in a leafy woodland. The place was deserted and peaceful, apart from the occasional bird call. A wonderful way to finish Scandinavia. |
