More royal palaces, this time we visited the palace of Fontainebleau. More
collections of state rooms, private apartments and grand ballrooms yet each
one is unique and has its own fascinations.

From there we headed towards the Burgundy and Dijon provinces. We stopped off
in the town of Auxerre, had the obligatory look at the church then strolled
through the town, past several streets of medieval houses. It was just
coming on to evening and the small town square was quite lively, with a band
playing and people selling various bits of art.

We eventually moved on and ended up spending the night in a campground beside
a river beneath the walled town of Avallon. Another nights free camping might
have been too much. The showers were beckoning.
